Choosing

Choosing a Bellemain coffee and tea

The first thing to settle is how much coffee you want to make at once. A 3‑cup moka pot produces a single strong shot, roughly the volume of a double espresso. It is the right size for one person who drinks short black coffee or uses the brew as the base for an Americano. The 6‑cup model yields about eight ounces.

That makes two small cups or one larger mug if you top it with hot water. Couples and pairs of roommates tend to reach for this size. The 9‑cup pot is for a breakfast table, a small dinner party, or anyone who fills a thermos before leaving the house. None of these brews are drip coffee. Moka coffee is concentrated and has more body, so a little goes further than you might expect.

Material decides how you care for the pot. Our aluminum moka pots are classic and light. They need hand washing and they build a patina over time, which is normal and does not affect flavor. The stainless steel version is 18/10 stainless. It can go in the dishwasher and it resists spotting. That one costs a little more, but if you are tired of hand washing a coffee maker every morning, it pays for itself in minutes saved. All three sizes come in silver, white, or black. The color is purely a kitchen choice. The internals are the same across finishes.

This department is not for everyone. A moka pot needs a stovetop, gas or electric. It will not work on an induction hob unless you use a diffuser plate, which we do not make. It is also not a set‑it‑and‑forget‑it brewer. You fill the basket, level the coffee, and watch for the gurgle. If you want a programmable machine that starts before you wake up, our coffee department is the wrong place. But if you like a hands‑on morning ritual and a strong cup, one of these will fit.
